.Background Info: The Archdiocese of New York was established by Pope Pius VII in 1808. Shortly after, St. Patrick’s Cathedral was founded to serve the city’s small but growing Catholic population, as the original St. Peter’s Church could no longer accommodate them. A site was selected on Mulberry Street in what is now Lower Manhattan, and in 1815, the original St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral was completed.
The current St. Patrick’s Cathedral is located at 631 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. It is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture and serves as a Roman Catholic cathedral. Formerly known as St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, it has since become a designated New York City Landmark and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, recognized as a National Historic Landmark, and included in the New York State Register of Historic Places.
